I have been SO INSPIRED by the people brave enough to share the details of their weight loss and lap band experiences, that I feel the need to share mine as well. I hope that something I post here may be inspiring or helpful to someone else.

That’s a total weight loss of 155 lbs! Congratulations, Brandy!

How did you come to the conclusion that the lap band was right for you?
Brandy: I decided that I had to do something and researched the R En Y. I decided it was not right for me, well because I just don’t like commitments. I was concerned what if the Dr. made the pouch too big or too small? I choose the band because I felt I had the most control.
What kind of insurance did you have or were you a self-pay patient?
Brandy: I am the wife of a Disabled Veteran and have ChampVA insurance.
What kind of band do you have? How many cc did it take to hit your “sweet spot”?
Brandy: I have the 4cc Inamed band. I hit my sweet spot at 3.00 cc’s, which took about 9 fills to get. I could only tolerate very small adjustments.
When and where did you have your surgery? Would you recommend that Dr or hospital to others?
Brandy: I had my surgery at Hurley Bariatric in Flint, Mi. I would highly recommend them.
Are you happy with your results from the lap band?
Brandy: Beyond happy, happiness has hit a whole new level!
Do you tell people that you have the band?
Brandy: Yes!
What kinds of foods do you eat?
Brandy: I eat pretty much whatever I want, with the understanding to myself that every calorie is counted. I use www.myparamidtracker.com to track all of my calorie intake. The key for me is never cutting out foods. If I really want something I have it, in small portions with the understanding that I will work it off later!
What kind of exercise do you do? How did you start?
Brandy: I exercise about 1.5 hours a day. I do 1 hour of cardio on a bike or treadmill for the most part. I then do .5 hour of weights alternating legs and arms each day. I do this at 4 am, 5 days a week. I started very slowly and only did about 15 minutes my first time. I have to still push myself to go sometimes, but I am always happy once I get there.
Any advice for people looking into getting the lap band?
Brandy: Make sure you a ready for the commitment. This isn’t a quick fix and it doesn’t do the work for you! You have to work it!
Any advice for people starting out with the band?
Brandy: Follow the bandster rules, workout and make good food choices. The band will not work unless you do! Picture your new life once you hit goal and think about it EVERYDAY. Motivate yourself by new clothes, shoes and purses not food! Remember food is now to be able to live life, not to live to eat!

I saw Ravenna on Wife Swap last night. Did you? She was great! I just had to look her up online and ask her what kind of weight loss surgery she had. Sure enough, she has the band! Here’s an excerpt of the email she wrote back
“Yes Kathy, I have a band! I went to France before it was FDA approved and got a MID band - but they’re all basically the same.”
Ravenna, I want to be like you when I grow up. You look fabulous!
WifeSwap cracks me up! These poor women; the show producers always put them the worst situation they can. Ravenna swapped with a lumberjill/lumberjack family! Both of the moms were way out of their element, which makes for lots of laughs and a few tears.
My favorite part was when the lumberjack dad was drawing with his son– thanks to Sarina aka Ravenna. I was also glad Sarina’s hubby broke the rule and refused to sell all of her burlesque stuff. Way to go Dan!!! This was one of the better episodes because both families seemed to learn something that made their lives better and the moms didn’t claw each other’s eyes out at the end (some of those meetings get pretty heated).
When I went looking for Ravenna online, I came across a series of articles about her at 360 Digest. I was very surprised to find out she had been fired from her Real Estate firm. Are you kidding me? In this day and age?!?! Well, long story short, a better firm hired her and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I’m glad things worked out in the end.
Be sure to stop by RavennaBlack.com and vote for her! She’s competing for Miss Viva Las Vegas.(keep in mind this is her burlesque site and may not be suitable for children)
What was your favorite part of the show?
